PM Modi to Flag Off First Train to Kashmir on Friday: Here's Why It Is India's Historic Rail Milestone
- On June 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch the inaugural Vande Bharat service connecting Jammu to Kashmir.
- The inauguration comes after finalizing the extensive 272-kilometer railway connection linking Udhampur, Srinagar, and Baramulla, a project that faced numerous delays due to challenging terrain and security issues since its inception in 1995.
- The rail link comprises 943 bridges, 36 tunnels, and features India’s longest railway tunnel, T-50. A standout structure on the route is the Chenab Bridge, a steel arch bridge rising 359 meters above the riverbed, making it the tallest railway arch bridge globally.
- The project, with an investment exceeding ₹43,000 crore, will cut the journey duration from Katra to Srinagar from six to seven hours down to approximately three hours, thereby improving regional connectivity and boosting economic opportunities.
- The inauguration of the train service marks the first direct rail link connecting Kashmir Valley to the rest of India, expected to boost tourism, trade, and employment in multiple sectors.
