'You are not scaling Ethereum': Vitalik Buterin issues a blunt reality check to the biggest crypto networks

Vitalik Buterin says many layer-2 networks do not meet Ethereum's security and decentralization standards and urges them to specialize as Ethereum Layer 1 scales directly.

  • On Tuesday, Vitalik Buterin posted on X that Ethereum's scaling needs a reset because many layer-2 networks no longer meaningfully inherit Ethereum's security.
  • The original rollup roadmap that treated layer-2s as secure extensions is undercut because Ethereum itself is scaling with rising gas limits, lower fees, and preparations for native rollups and zkEVM integration.
  • Buterin cited concrete examples such as a 10000 TPS EVM linked by a multisig bridge and warned many layer-2s rely on centralized sequencers or multisig-controlled bridges, with some layer-2 operators citing regulatory needs for limited decentralization.
  • Rather than compete on raw throughput, Buterin urged layer-2 networks to specialize in privacy, identity, finance, social apps, AI or ultra-low-latency, stressing clarity on guarantees to users.
  • As gas limits are expected to rise in 2026, the critique gains immediacy and could push layer-2 projects to change messaging or accelerate decentralization in the Ethereum ecosystem.
