Modi Inaugurates Ambitious Rail Project Connecting Kashmir to Indian Plains
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Bridge, a record-breaking railway arch bridge spanning the Chenab River, as well as India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge over the Anji River in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.
- Although the Chenab bridge project was approved in 2002, construction commenced in 2017 following the completion of 26 kilometers of access roads and a tunnel measuring 400 meters in length to reach the location.
- Spanning 1,315 metres in length, the Chenab bridge is positioned 359 metres above the water level—making it 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower—and has been designed to withstand earthquakes, high winds, and severe weather conditions.
- Modi highlighted that the newly inaugurated 272-kilometer railway line linking the Kashmir Valley to mainland India will provide reliable year-round transportation, enhance religious tourism, and generate new economic opportunities for local communities.
- The inauguration represents a strategic advance for Kashmir’s infrastructure amid recent regional tensions and aims to improve economic development, travel ease, and regional integration.
