Five people die in fire outside Pemex's Olmeca refinery in Mexico

Heavy rains caused an oil spill that ignited oily waters, killing five people including a Pemex employee, while refinery operations remained unaffected, Pemex confirmed.

  • On Tuesday, five people, including a Pemex worker, died after a fire ignited outside the Olmeca refinery perimeter in Tabasco. State-run oil firm Pemex reported the blaze occurred at sunrise.
  • Heavy rains caused oily water to overflow outside the facility, pooling near the perimeter fence before igniting. Pemex officials attributed the spill and subsequent fire to the intense rainfall.
  • Operational since 2024, the Olmeca refinery has a maximum capacity of 340,000 barrels per day. In January, the facility produced 205,000 barrels per day, struggling to reach its full potential.
  • Pemex confirmed the flames were extinguished within two hours and do not represent a risk for the population or workers. The company is collaborating with authorities to investigate the incident.
  • Inaugurated in 2022 under President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the $21 billion project aimed to achieve 'energy sovereignty.' However, the refinery has faced frequent stoppages and failed to meet production targets.
