Venezuela to investigate Bukele, other officials for alleged detainee abuse

EL SALVADOR, JUL 22 – Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced a probe into torture and abuse claims involving over 250 migrants detained in El Salvador's CECOT prison since March.

  • On Monday, Venezuela’s top legal official, Tarek Saab, announced a formal inquiry into claims of mistreatment involving more than 200 Venezuelan detainees held at El Salvador’s Cecot prison.
  • This inquiry comes after a prisoner swap took place on Friday, in which 252 Venezuelans deported from the United States were sent back home in return for the release of 10 American citizens, amid ongoing regional tensions.
  • Saab showed edited footage where detainees described beatings, sexual assault, and use of pepper spray, while families expressed joy but noted migrants have not yet reunited.
  • Officials collected 123 complaints of abuse involving Salvadoran prison guards, while El Salvador claimed detainees had gang ties, a claim rejected by advocates citing many had no criminal records.
  • The investigation could increase diplomatic strain and underscores challenges in safeguarding foreign nationals as deportees undergo standard health, immigration, and criminal background checks.
