INDIA, JUL 25 – The ban targets platforms hosting sexually explicit content violating multiple Indian laws, following a 90-page report and regulatory complaints about harmful material accessible to minors.
- On July 25 in Mumbai, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting ordered ISPs to block access to 25 apps and websites, including ALTT, ULLU and Big Shots App.
- Under the IT Act, 2000 and IT Rules, 2021 platforms were flagged for multiple breaches and continued violations, prompting the ban.
- The official notification, signed by the Joint Secretary and Nodal Officer, warns intermediaries of losing safe harbour protection under Section 79, while MIB notified the Department of Telecommunications and requested compliance facilitation.
- The measure aims to curb circulation of sexually explicit material online, and the 25 apps and sites are expected to go offline once ISPs finish blocking.
