The poverty rate rose sharply in 2023 to 15.4 per cent of the population, an increase of 0.9 percentage points and the highest level in 30 years.

The profile of the poor remains broadly unchanged, with a strong representation of single-parent families.

"We must return to the early 1970s to have about comparable levels of poverty," explained the head of the household resources and living conditions department at INSEE.
