The Slovenians vote on Sunday on the abolition of the broadcasting fee. The initiative goes back to the pro-Russian populist party Resnica (truth), which had launched a referendum in the previous year. Prime Minister Janez Janša's mid-right government, which has been in office since June, took up this drive for a referendum in response to a simultaneous opposition referendum against controversial social reforms.
Abolishing the RTV contribution would eliminate the €14.02 fee, while public broadcasters would continue to be financed through taxes. Journalist organizations warn that without proper safeguards, greater dependence on the budget would allow for political pressure, program cuts, and staff reductions.
