Guru Nanak Birth Anniversary: Centre Allows Sikh Jatha to Visit Pakistan, Albeit with Riders
India reversed its earlier ban to allow Sikh pilgrims to visit Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev's birth anniversary under strict security checks and official vetting, officials said.
- On October 2, the Government of India granted permission for Sikh jathas to travel to Pakistan for Prakash Purab, scheduled November 4 to 13, 2025, and Punjab BJP Vice President Fatehjung Singh Bajwa thanked the Centre.
- After an earlier denial on September 12, 2025 by the MHA citing security concerns, Sikh organisations, including the SGPC, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 29, prompting a review.
- Security vetting requires State Police, CID and state intelligence review before MEA and MHA sign-off, with applications accepted only through Sikh religious organisations and direct visa requests banned.
- Pilgrims will cross the Attari-Wagah border to visit Nankana Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur under the 1974 India-Pakistan bilateral protocol, and the SGPC and Sri Akal Takht Sahib welcomed the decision.
- Observers warn the approval comes with restrictions that narrow Sikh pilgrims' access, as Delhi intelligence agencies now decide who may visit historic shrines in West Punjab.
