UPI Payments with Face or Fingerprint, No PIN Needed From Oct 8: Story in 5 Points

NPCI's biometric authentication for UPI payments replaces PINs with face or fingerprint scans to reduce fraud and simplify transactions for millions of users, officials said.

  • From October 8, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India will enable Unified Payments Interface users to authenticate payments via face or fingerprint scans, unveiled at the Global Fintech Festival, Mumbai on October 7, 2025.
  • Regulators' concern about PIN-related scams prompted the move after the Reserve Bank of India recently allowed alternative methods following an initiative started three years ago.
  • Using Aadhaar-linked biometrics, the system authenticates fingerprints and facial data on-device, while issuing banks verify transactions cryptographically and the biometric option remains optional.
  • The change should speed and secure payments, improving access for senior citizens and rural users as Unified Payments Interface handles around 20 billion transactions per month worth over Rs 25 trillion.
  • Beyond phones, NPCI has introduced wearable payments via UPI Lite, enabling small-value transactions on wearable smart glasses with voice-command payments, while India’s national adoption stands at 87% versus 67% globally.
