New superbug-killing antibiotic discovered using AI

  • Scientists in Canada and the US have used AI to discover a new antibiotic called abaucin that can kill the drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, which is a critical threat according to the World Health Organization.
  • The AI helped researchers narrow down thousands of potential chemicals to produce a shortlist, reducing the time and cost of discovering new antibiotics.
  • Lab experiments showed that abaucin was able to treat infected wounds in mice and kill A. baumannii samples from patients. The researchers believe the precision of abaucin could make it harder for drug-resistance to emerge and lead to fewer side-effects.
