Suspected gunman in National Guard shooting in DC is charged with multiple firearms offenses
Jarrell Lamont Jackson is accused of firing into a crowd during a street fight, and three National Guard members returned fire, officials said.
- On Sunday, Oct. 18, Jarrell Lamont Jackson, 41, allegedly shot Georgia National Guard member Karon Jones, 20, in the leg during a street fight in the 400 block of 8th Street SE in Southeast Washington.
- Jackson pulled a 9mm handgun after guardsmen attempted to break up the disturbance; three members returned fire, wounding Jackson in the abdomen as he retreated toward an alleyway.
- Federal prosecutors assumed jurisdiction, charging Jackson with assault with a dangerous weapon and firearms offenses. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro called the shooting a "brazen attack" on troops firing into a crowded corridor.
- Both men were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and released shortly after. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll issued a temporary closure order for Cafe 8, citing a history of violence.
- The incident intensifies debate over the deployment of over 2,900 Guard members to Washington, which President Donald Trump ordered in August 2025; critics argue the mobilization is an illegal use of military force.
