Guatemalan Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Deadly Human Smuggling Case that Killed 53
Prosecutors said Miranda-Orozco helped arrange travel and lodging for migrants in the 2022 case that left 53 dead and 11 injured.
On Tuesday, a federal judge sentenced Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco to 30 years in prison for his role in a 2022 human smuggling operation that left 53 migrants dead inside an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas.
Miranda-Orozco arranged travel for migrants, charging $12,000 to $15,000 per person before loading them into a tractor-trailer with a broken air conditioning unit for the 156-mile journey from Laredo to San Antonio.
At least 64 migrants, including six children and a pregnant woman, were trapped in 90-degree heat; 21 of the 53 deceased victims were from Guatemala, Miranda-Orozco's home country.
Miranda-Orozco is the third person sentenced in this case; smuggling ring leader Felipe Orduna Torres received life in prison, and accomplice Armando Gonzalez Ortega received 83 years. "Miranda Orozco was a key component," US Attorney for the Western District of Texas Justin Simmons told reporters.
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva stated that under President Trump, the Criminal Division and Joint Task Force Alpha will sustain maximum pressure on smuggling organizations to hold criminals accountable for preventable tragedies and protect United States borders.
A federal judge sentenced a Guatemalan man to 30 years in prison on Tuesday for his involvement in an attempted human trafficking in 2022 that resulted in the death of 53 migrants who were transferred in the box of a trailer in the suffocating heat of Texas.
