Retired NYPD Detective Arrested in Road Rage Killing on George Washington Bridge
Police say the retired detective was charged after a fatal shooting that shut the bridge for hours and triggered a major investigation.
On Tuesday, Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old Con Edison worker, was fatally shot on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the George Washington Bridge during what police describe as a road rage dispute.
Investigators suspect the shooting began after Irvine's Blue Volkswagen Golf nearly collided with a black Range Rover, prompting the suspect to fire a shot through the rear window.
Medics rushed Irvine to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead; his family described the 46-year-old as a devoted husband and father who lived for his family "100%," and a passionate New York Jets fan.
Less than 24 hours after the shooting, a person of interest surrendered to police on Wednesday and is currently held at the 33rd Precinct stationhouse with charges pending.
The George Washington Bridge carries around 100 million vehicles annually between New Jersey and Manhattan, and Port Authority officials reported delays of up to 90 minutes during the investigation Tuesday night.
