Minnesota officials, feds launch new collaboration to tackle youth violence
More than 40 agencies will share firearm evidence and assign resources as officials respond to recent shootings tied to Somali youth.
On Monday, Minnesota law enforcement leaders announced a wide-scale collaboration to combat gun violence among Somali youth groups, establishing the Hennepin Enhanced Enforcement Team with local, state, and federal agencies.
This effort follows recent shootings across the Twin Cities, including an Eden Prairie High School homecoming game incident that injured two people and a Bloomington shooting where police recovered nearly 100 shell casings.
Officials are applying the nearly 20-year-old New Jersey Strategy to build strong cases. FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Dotson said the federal Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act is "on the table."
Several Somali American police officers rejected the use of "gangs" at a Sunday listening session, calling the term harmful. Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt reiterated pleas not to judge the entire community for the actions of a few.
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher is planning multiple community meetings after the Nov. 3 election to continue discussions with the Somali community. He said the first meeting will focus on empowering Somali mothers.
