National Guard member shot in DC, police chief says
Police said both the Guardsman and suspected gunman were expected to survive after the exchange of gunfire near Eastern Market.
A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday near Eastern Market in the 400 block of 8th Street South East, with the suspected gunman also wounded during the altercation, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll explained that seven or eight Guardsmen in a van attempted to intervene in a fight outside an "establishment" at about 11 p.m. One participant drew a weapon and fired, prompting three Guardsmen to return fire.
Both injured parties were hospitalized with injuries Chief Carroll described as "non-life threatening," and he expects them to survive. The suspected gunman is in custody with no further public threat.
The MPD's Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigations divisions are leading the investigation into the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police Department at 727-9099.
This incident occurs almost one year after the November 26, 2025, shooting of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe near Farragut West, which prompted President Donald Trump to summon 500 additional Guardsmen to Washington.
