PM Hails Kashmir to Kanyakumari Rail Connectivity - The Statesman
- On June 6, 2025, the world’s tallest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The bridge is part of the decades-long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project, which began after Maharaja Pratap Singh proposed rail routes in 1884 to connect Kashmir with India.
- Constructed over harsh Himalayan terrain using advanced seismic isolation and corrosion-resistant materials, the 359-meter bridge spans 1.3 km steel arch and required precision to overcome severe weather and geological challenges.
- The Chenab Bridge, which cost around ₹1,486 crore, facilitates the operation of Vande Bharat Express trains on the route from Katra to Srinagar, cutting travel time to less than three hours and enhancing tourism, defense capabilities, and economic development in the region.
- The inauguration completes a century-old vision integrating Kashmir’s rail line with India’s network, marking a historic milestone in regional connectivity and symbolizing national unity and engineering resilience.
