Turkish police arrested five mayors affiliated with the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Wednesday morning, as part of a broader investigation into suspected corruption in several municipalities under the party's control.
Five new Republican People's Party (CPP) columnists were placed in pre-trial detention on 4 June, bringing the number of elected members of Istanbul arrested since autumn to eight.
The Turkish government continues to oppose the opposition, accusing high-ranking CHP politicians and other people of corruption. A double-digit number of people are now being arrested.
Seventeen other people, who had been arrested over the weekend, including deputy mayors of Istanbul districts, were also placed under temporary detention for "corruption"
