4 people dead and 8 wounded in a shooting and fire at a Michigan church, police say
At least four killed and eight injured after a suspect rammed a vehicle into a Michigan church, opened fire, and set the building on fire, police said.
- On September 28, 2025, a man rammed a vehicle into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , opened fire and set the building ablaze; local law enforcement and an armed Michigan Department of Natural Resources officer shot the attacker dead.
- Police identified the suspect as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of Burton, Michigan, who served in the military including deployment to Iraq, as the attack occurred during Sunday worship with hundreds inside.
- Officials warned some victims remain unaccounted for as police said at least 10 gunshot victims were transported to local hospitals and one worshipper died.
- The FBI is leading the investigation and local authorities said the bureau was sending 100 agents to Grand Blanc Township, while The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints thanked first responders.
- As the second U.S. mass shooting in under 24 hours, officials noted a troubling pattern of attacks on places of worship in the United States, with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer calling violence at places of worship unacceptable.
