YouTube’s likeness detection has arrived to help stop AI doppelgängers
YouTube’s new tool lets eligible creators remove AI-generated videos using their face or voice to stop misuse and misinformation, launched after a pilot phase this year.
- On Tuesday, YouTube revealed it has rolled out likeness detection to eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with the first wave notified via email this morning and broader access planned over the next few months.
- After a pilot earlier this year, YouTube says the technology aims to prevent misuse like unauthorized endorsements and misinformation, following last year’s partnership with Creative Artists Agency .
- To enroll, creators must consent to data processing, scan a smartphone QR code, and submit government ID plus a brief selfie video; once approved, they can use YouTube Studio Content Detection tab and scanning stops 24 hours after requests.
- Creators can now request removal of AI-generated content using likeness, but YouTube warns the system isn’t 100% guaranteed and may miss cases or show false positives.
- Privacy advocates note face scans and government ID are stored on Google’s servers, and YouTube says it will expand access to the YouTube Partner Program in the near future while backing the NO FAKES Act.
