- ICE says Roberts entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999 and had a final order of removal issued in May 2024, lacking work authorization.
- Agents say they found a loaded handgun, a fixed-blade hunting knife, and more than $3,000 in cash in the Des Moines Public Schools vehicle, ICE ERO Director Sam Olson said, `This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement.`
- The Des Moines school board voted unanimously to place Roberts on paid leave and hired a third-party for background checks, unaware of the removal order, prompting a review and Nunn's document request.
- The arrest has rattled a district serving more than 30,000 students and raised questions about vetting as Ian Roberts, an Olympian, earned $305,917 and held an Iowa administrator license.
