Hunt For GA Soldiers In Lithuania Challenged By Terrain, Army Says

  • Four U.S. Army soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart went missing on Tuesday during a tactical training exercise near Pabradė, Lithuania, a town less than 6 miles from the Belarus border.
  • The soldiers went missing during an exercise at the General Silvestras }ukauskas training ground.
  • An M88 Hercules, the armed vehicle the soldiers were traveling in, was found submerged in a body of water within the training area, and search and recovery operations are ongoing involving U.S., Lithuanian Armed Forces, and civilian agencies.
  • NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte initially stated the soldiers 'have been killed,' later clarified by NATO's press secretary who stated, "We regret any confusion about remarks @SecGenNATO delivered on this today...He was not confirming the fate of the missing."
  • As of Thursday, the search continues, and despite early reports, the U.S. Army and Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene maintain that the soldiers' status is unconfirmed, with Sakaliene describing the search as "complicated" and families being kept informed.
