Uttarkashi helicopter crash: Chopper hit overhead cable during emergency landing, says AIIB preliminary report

UTTARKASHI DISTRICT, UTTARAKHAND, INDIA, MAY 8 – The helicopter struck an overhead fiber-optic cable during an emergency landing attempt, killing six including the pilot and injuring one, according to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau report.

  • During an emergency landing near Gangnani, the Bell 407 helicopter's main rotor blade struck an overhead fiber-optic cable, causing a crash, the AAIB preliminary report states.
  • As a charter for the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, the flight connected multiple helipads, it was the fifth crash on that route within six weeks.
  • After striking the cable, the helicopter tumbled about 250 feet down a hillside into a gorge, coming to rest against a tree without catching fire, while one passenger was seriously injured.
  • Authorities reported six fatalities and international assistance, with the AAIB said the NTSB and TSB have appointed representatives to assist.
  • A committee will submit its report by August 15, having gathered perishable evidence and components, to prevent future helicopter accidents.
