US judge blocks Trump from cutting Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 22 states
The injunction preserves Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 22 states and DC, protecting healthcare access for over 1.1 million people, as the law faces constitutional challenges.
- On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of an OBBA provision that would strip Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood affiliates in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
- Designed by the Republican-led Congress, the OBBA includes a provision that bars Medicaid funding to tax-exempt clinics that provide abortions and received more than $800,000 in Medicaid reimbursements.
- Planned Parenthood says at least 20 health centers closed since the appeals court allowed the law to take effect, and U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani called the statute `impermissibly ambiguous`, warning it would increase patients unable to receive birth control and preventive screenings.
- But Talwani stayed the order to allow the Trump administration to appeal and ordered a $100 bond to keep the injunction in place until at least July 21.
- With no immediate comment from the White House or HHS, the case is likely to proceed to further litigation after Tuesday's victory announced by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who joined a July coalition of attorneys general.
