University extends help to overseas family of Indian student who drowned in river

THOMPSON-NICOLA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 17 – Jatin Garg drowned while retrieving a volleyball in the Thompson River; $21,817 has been raised to support funeral and repatriation efforts, community members said.

  • Tuesday saw the recovery of Garg’s body near McArthur Island, concluding a nine-day search following his disappearance.
  • On July 6, 2025, Jatin Garg entered the Thompson River to retrieve a volleyball, and was swept away by a strong undercurrent, despite previous warnings about dangerous river currents.
  • In a social media post, Kamloops Search and Rescue said a swiftwater team member found the body when paddling `intentionally but unofficially`, involving Kamloops Fire Rescue and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.
  • The university has become uncomfortably familiar with such support when Baihua Chadwick, TRU Vice-President International, said she has spoken with Garg’s father and offered university assistance.
  • As of Thursday morning, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $21,817 toward a $28,000 goal, with TRU considering inviting KSAR to orientation for water-safety talks.
