UN human rights investigator delivers Gaza report from South Africa because of US sanctions

  • On Tuesday, Francesca Albanese, United Nations special rapporteur on Palestine, presented her Gaza Genocide: a collective crime report to the United Nations General Assembly remotely from the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation in Cape Town because U.S. sanctions blocked her travel earlier this year.
  • Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of State sanctioned Albanese for supporting antisemitism and terrorism, denying her a visa, while U.N. officials called the sanctions unacceptable and urged their reversal.
  • The report documents that the 24-page analysis highlights U.S. diplomatic cover with seven Security Council vetoes, German arms exports, over 600 UK surveillance missions, and a $26.4bn U.S. defence package to Israel.
  • Albanese urged United Nations member states to adopt a rights-based multilateralism with a permanent end to fighting and full Israeli withdrawal; Israel and the U.S. rejected the report, with Danny Danon calling it `shameful` and disparaging Albanese personally.
  • The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, has killed more than 67,000 and displaced 2.3 million people in Gaza, with ceasefire strains and strikes prolonging volatility.
