Ukraine says Starlink's global outage hit its military communications

UKRAINE, JUL 25 – An internal software failure caused a 2.5-hour global Starlink outage affecting over 6 million users and disrupting Ukrainian military drone and communication operations.

  • On Thursday, SpaceX’s Starlink suffered one of its biggest international outages, caused by an internal software failure and knocking tens of thousands of users offline around 19:00 GMT.
  • Amid three and a half years of war, reliance on satellite links grew, with Oleksandr Dmitriev warning that the outage showed cloud-based command systems posed a `huge risk`.
  • Amid the outage, military units operated blind, with Robert Brovdi reporting `Starlink is down across the entire front` and noting combat missions proceeded without video feeds for two and a half hours.
  • Starlink’s official X account confirmed service was restored by 8:15 p.m. ET, after Elon Musk wrote `Sorry for the outage.` while SpaceX pledged remedies.
  • With over 8,000 satellites launched since 2020, SpaceX is partnering with T-Mobile to expand its satellite constellation for direct-to-cell messaging, building on recent network upgrades.
