Three Men Suffer Serious Injuries After Racial Assault on Helen's Bay Beach
Three men suffered serious injuries and three suspects remain in custody as police investigate the beach attack as a racially motivated hate crime.
On Monday around 9pm, three men in their 30s were assaulted at Helen's Bay beach in County Down by three other men following a verbal altercation, sustaining serious but non-life threatening injuries in what police are treating as a racially-motivated hate crime.
The assault occurred during a busy Bank Holiday weekend when hundreds of revellers were at Helen's Bay beach on one of the year's hottest days, drawing large crowds enjoying the evening sunshine.
Three men aged 28, 23 and 21 were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon; a vehicle search uncovered suspected class A and class B drugs, with the 23-year-old facing additional charges.
Ards and North Down District Chief Inspector Hutchinson said the incident 'was shocking for those enjoying the evening sunshine,' while commending members of the public who helped prevent escalation and promising the investigation is 'progressing at pace.'
Investigators are particularly keen to hear from anyone who recorded footage of the incident, asking the public to contact police on 101 with reference 1721 as enquiries continue.
