The Father of a US-Based Hong Kong Activist Is Sentenced to 8 Months Under National Security Law
Kwok Yin-sang was sentenced for attempting to withdraw HK$88,000 from his fugitive daughter's insurance policy, the first conviction of a family member under Hong Kong's 2024 national security law.
- Thursday, Acting Principal Magistrate Cheng Lim-chi sentenced Kwok Yin-sang, 69, to eight months at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts under Article 23.
- He had tried in January and February last year to cancel an AIA policy bought in 1999 and withdraw about HK$88,000 from it, court heard.
- The defence argued the policy remained his, he pleaded not guilty, and mitigation letters cited his health, leading to an eight-month sentence after the judge considered age and record.
- Consulate representatives from the UK, US, Germany and Belgium observed the hearing, while Hong Kong government and police said they acted `in accordance with the law` and have a duty to pursue suspects.
- The case sets a precedent as the first family-member conviction under Article 23, and rights NGOs, Western states and the UN criticised the law as vague and `regressive`.
