France to ban smoking in public parks, beaches
- Starting July 1, 2025, France will prohibit smoking in outdoor public areas where children have access, such as parks, beaches, bus stops, and other similar locations.
- The ban arises from the National Anti-Tobacco Programme 2023–2027, aiming for a tobacco-free generation by 2032 and responding to prior local bans and public health concerns.
- The ban covers public gardens, school surroundings, sports venues, and bus stops but exempts outdoor café terraces and electronic cigarettes, as announced by Health Minister Catherine Vautrin.
- Vautrin emphasized that smoking should be prohibited in areas frequented by children, with violations subject to fines up to 135 euros .
- The new restrictions reinforce existing smoking bans in workplaces and other public spaces and reflect that about 62% of French favor these measures amid 75,000 annual tobacco-related deaths.
