Rheinmetall to supply Ukraine with additional Skyranger air defense systems
Rheinmetall will deliver Skyranger 35 systems mounted on Leopard 1 tanks to enhance Ukraine's air defense against drone attacks under a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros.
- Rheinmetall, the German arms manufacturer, said on October 10, 2025, it will supply Skyranger 35 systems on Leopard 1 tank chassis to Ukraine under a three-digit-million Euro contract financed by an unnamed EU member state using frozen Russian assets.
- With Russia intensifying drone strikes, including over 450 drones launched last night, Ukraine urgently seeks cost-effective air defence to protect cities and energy infrastructure ahead of winter months.
- The Leopard 1 Skyranger 35 pairs a tracked chassis with a GDM-008 35 mm automatic cannon firing 1,000 rounds per minute and carries 252 rounds including AHEAD airburst ammunition.
- Production and integration will be carried out by Rheinmetall Italia SpA in Rome, and Ukraine previously received truck-mounted Skyranger 35s; DW News noted this is the second German air-defence system entering Ukrainian service before Germany.
- Rheinmetall notes that AHEAD airburst rounds make the Skyranger 35 a cost-effective option, and the system could be fitted with missiles in future, despite NASAMS missile costs of $600,000 to $1 million.
