French Parliament Adopts Symbolic Resolution to Repeal Pension Reform
- France's National Assembly passed a symbolic resolution urging the reversal of the 2023 pension law that increased the retirement age to 64.
- The resolution followed mass protests and previous reform passage via Article 49.3, which bypassed assembly voting and triggered political tension.
- The resolution was brought forward by the Democratic and Republican Left group, which is led by the Communist Party, and it passed with a vote of 198 to 35, gaining backing from both left-wing factions and far-right parties.
- Stephane Peu remarked that the French have not moved on, citing survey results from Ifop conducted for the CGT, which revealed that about two-thirds of the population favor overturning the reform.
- Although the resolution lacks legal authority, it serves as a formal demonstration of parliamentary dissent and seeks to heighten challenges faced by the government amid ongoing discussions.
