Reacher’s Alan Ritchson Joins Netflix Action Movie 33 Years in the Making

Netflix is reviving the 33-year-old action spec after Carry-On became one of its most watched films.

  • On Tuesday, Reacher star Alan Ritchson entered negotiations to headline Maelstrom, a high-octane action project at Netflix, according to Variety.
  • Originally sold as a spec script to Warner Bros. in 1993 by producer Jeff Robinov, the project languished for roughly 33 years before finding new life at Netflix.
  • Director Jaume Collet-Serra will helm the film, with screenwriter Mark Bianculli modernizing the script from a draft by late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick. The story follows a Federal Marshal protecting an arms dealer's fiancée during a hurricane.
  • Netflix is reportedly applying the same strategy used for Carry-On, another project that spent 11 years dormant before Collet-Serra rejuvenated it. Neither the streamer nor Ritchson has officially confirmed the deal.
  • Ritchson recently wrapped filming The Man with the Bag, which features Arnold Schwarzenegger as Santa Claus and is scheduled for release on December 2, 2026.
