Protests on opposite sides of London amid police restrictions
Police restricted Ukip protests from Muslim-populated Whitechapel due to risks of serious disorder while allowing counter-protests by Stand Up To Racism from 12pm, authorities said.
- On Saturday, protesters from opposing groups will descend on different sides of London after police blocked United Kingdom Independence Party from gathering near Whitechapel because of a `realistic prospect of serious disorder`.
- Citing a realistic prospect of serious disorder, the Metropolitan Police invoked the Public Order Act earlier this week to prevent a protest in Whitechapel and Scotland Yard imposed more restrictions Friday to prevent serious disorder.
- A counter-protest organised by Stand Up To Racism will start from 12pm in east London while Public Order Act conditions bar Ukip members from protesting before 1pm or after 4.30pm.
- Officials stressed the measure was not a `ban` but a requirement to move the protest if it were to go ahead, with Nick John saying the Metropolitan Police aim to prevent disruption to residents, visitors and businesses.
- Police intervention earlier this week used Public Order Act powers to stop a Whitechapel protest, part of a `mass deportations tour` promoted by United Kingdom Independence Party .
