Ousted PM Hasina faces prison on return to Bangladesh, minister says
A senior minister said Hasina will face jail and further legal proceedings if she returns, as Bangladesh seeks her extradition from India.
- On Monday, Bangladesh state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam warned that ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be jailed if she returns from self-imposed exile in India. "If she surrenders, action will be taken against her as per the laws of Bangladesh," Islam told reporters.
- A war-crimes court sentenced Hasina to death in absentia in November 2024 for ordering a deadly crackdown on student-led protests that the United Nations reported killed 1,400 people. Hasina has dismissed the conviction as politically motivated.
- Hasina told Reuters last week she intends to return voluntarily in December to surrender. "Cases have been filed against almost all of our leaders and workers, and many of them are in hiding," Hasina said, calling on party colleagues to return together.
- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's administration dismissed Hasina's return plan as "an attempt to mobilise fugitive party leaders and activists." Officials maintained that she remains a convicted criminal subject to immediate arrest regardless of where she surrenders.
- Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite Hasina, who has resided in New Delhi since August 2024. India stated in April it is examining the request while seeking to "engage constructively with the new government and further strengthen bilateral ties.
