AI-Powered Rubio Impersonator Makes Calls to Foreign Ministers, Other Top Officials: Report
UNITED STATES, JUL 09 – An AI-driven scam impersonated Secretary Rubio to contact five officials, including three foreign ministers, aiming to access sensitive information, the State Department said.
- On July 3, the U.S. State Department issued a cable alerting diplomats about an impersonator using AI technology to mimic Senator Marco Rubio in attempts to contact several foreign ministers, a senator, and a governor.
- This warning followed a spring investigation into malicious actors sending texts and AI-generated voice messages impersonating senior officials, including Trump’s chief of staff Susie Wiles.
- The impersonator used a fake marco.rubio@state.gov email and left AI-generated voicemails, inviting targets to communicate via Signal, while messages were not from Wiles’ real number.
- Officials told The Associated Press the scheme was unsuccessful and “not very sophisticated,” with no direct cyber threat, but urged caution as efforts to compromise security rise.
- The incident highlights growing AI misuse risks, prompting the government to strengthen cybersecurity and warn employees and foreign governments about deepfake impersonations.
