Oscar-Winning Irish Actress Brenda Fricker Dies, Aged 81
The Dublin actress won the first Irish woman’s Academy Award and became known to new audiences for her role in Home Alone 2.
Irish actress Brenda Fricker, the first from her country to win an Academy Award, has died at age 81, her agent Phil Belfield confirmed on Friday.
Fricker made history in 1990 by winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Bridget Fagan Brown in the 1989 biopic My Left Foot, dedicating the award to "all the people of Ireland."
International audiences recognized Fricker for her role as the "Pigeon Lady" in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and her early work in the BBC medical drama Casualty.
Belfield honored the late actor, stating, "We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her," following her recent Freedom of the City of Dublin award.
Her recent memoir, She Died Young, reached the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list, while Belfield noted her final solo performance in The Swallow showed the "truth and majesty of Brenda as an actor.
