OpenAI's invite-only iOS app Sora reached 164,000 downloads in two days, enabling AI-generated short videos with realistic audio and visual effects.
- On Tuesday, OpenAI launched Sora as an invite-only iOS app in the United States and Canada that lets users generate, remix, and share short-form AI videos.
- Amid rising valuation and sales activity, OpenAI said `We do mostly need the capital for build AI that can do science, and for sure we are focused on AGI with almost all of our research effort`, and completed a $500 billion valuation secondary sale, with Sora seen as a potential revenue source.
- Featuring Sora 2 in the free Sora app, OpenAI said it offers synchronized dialogue, realistic physics, and competes with Google's Veo 2, which limits free-tier access.
- Third-Party estimates show rapid downloads around 164,000 in two days, with critics describing content as 'slop' and Sam Altman warning, `It is easy to imagine the degenerate case of AI video generation that ends up with us all being sucked into an RL-optimized slop feed.`
- OpenAI says the app includes safeguards and likeness protection letting users control how and when their image is used, while Bill Peebles called the creativity "epic" on Friday.
