Ofsted's new-look school report cards to be rolled out within months
Ofsted's reforms introduce a new 'exceptional' grade and more frequent inspections to enhance clarity and support rapid improvement, with 67% of parents preferring the new report cards.
- This year, Ofsted confirmed it will introduce redesigned report cards with a colour-coded five-point grading scale including a new top grade, `exceptional`, to provide parents and carers more detail during inspections.
- After a 12-week consultation this year, more than 6,500 responses shaped reforms following criticism after Ruth Perry, headteacher's death last year and related reviews.
- Ofsted will also change inspection practice by increasing early years providers' inspections to every four years, adding safeguarding and pupil experience to report cards, and deploying regional improvement teams to 377 schools.
- Polling shows almost 7 in 10 parents prefer the new report cards, but a coalition of school leaders, unions and Professor Julia Waters has urged Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to delay rollout, citing staff wellbeing concerns.
- The phased rollout means reforms will begin this year for early years, state-funded schools and FE and skills, with implementation tested through continual evaluation including an externally commissioned review.
