Nipah Alert in West Bengal: Centre Rushes Expert Response Team
- On Monday , two healthcare workers in Barasat city were identified as suspected Nipah cases detected at All India Institute of Medical Sciences-Kalyani on Sunday night.
- With an incubation period four to 14 days, health authorities are prioritising contact tracing since patients had local travel to Purba Bardhaman but had not travelled outside West Bengal in the recent past.
- A National Joint Outbreak Response Team has been deployed, and the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre at NCDC Delhi was activated to coordinate with the State IDSP, the Centre said.
- Contact-Tracing is under way across North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman and Nadia districts while the State launched helplines 03323330180, 9874708858, 9836046212 and withheld facility details for privacy.
- Because there is no vaccine, clinical isolation and quarantine are central to response, as some infected can be asymptomatic carriers and past outbreaks in West Bengal 2007 and Kerala August 2025 highlight regional risk.
