NHS to offer same-day prostate cancer diagnosis with AI tool used to analyse results

The AI trial will test 10,000 MRI scans at 15 hospitals to speed up diagnosis and biopsies, potentially saving men months of waiting, NHS England said.

  • This year, NHS England will trial AI to interpret 10,000 MRI scans at up to 15 hospitals, enabling same-day prostate cancer diagnoses and potential national rollout.
  • Under current best-practice guidelines, men with suspected prostate cancer should get an MRI and biopsy within a week, but waits can be longer due to radiologist capacity.
  • Some 58,218 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in England in 2024, up from 53,462 the year before, and Professor Peter Johnson said the AI trial could be a game changer saving weeks of worry.
  • If the software flags a scan, flagged high-risk scans will be prioritised for radiologist review and patients booked for a same-day biopsy, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said this will deliver better outcomes.
  • The new AI tool Pi, developed by Lucida Medical, will be trialled at up to 15 hospitals ahead of the Government's National Cancer Plan later this year, with Prostate Cancer UK citing anxiety reduction and capacity gains.
