New butterfly species named after Iryna Zaruska, Ukrainian refugee killed in North Carolina

Iryna's Azure butterfly, found in South Carolina, honors the Ukrainian refugee killed in Charlotte; a North Carolina law reforming criminal justice was also enacted in her name.

  • On Friday, Harry Pavulaan, president and director of the International Lepidoptera Survey, named a South Carolina butterfly Iryna's Azure to honor Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee fatally stabbed on Aug. 22, 2025.
  • After seeing videos of her death, Harry Pavulaan expedited the taxonomic paper and sent copies plus a framed specimen to Zarutska's family, who expressed gratitude and closure.
  • The species shows light-blue dorsal wings with a distinct violet-blue tint, and it mainly flies in April, the Pavulaan report says.
  • Earlier this month, Gov. Josh Stein signed House Bill 307, Iryna's Law, which targets cashless bail, studies mental-health intersections, and adds aggravated transit sentencing.
  • Decarlos Brown Jr., suspect charged in Zarutska's killing, was indicted Wednesday on federal charges of violence against a railroad carrier resulting in death and has 14 prior arrests and documented schizophrenia.
