INVERCARGILL, NEW ZEALAND, JUL 1 – A 20-year-old faces multiple charges after stealing an ambulance with a police officer and paramedic onboard, with the vehicle stopped within a block and no injuries reported.
- Early Monday morning in Invercargill, a 20-year-old man allegedly stole an ambulance while police and ambulance staff addressed an agitated person onboard.
- The man reportedly moved from the ambulance's back to the driver's seat and began driving, causing police to intervene and stop the vehicle after about a block.
- Inspector Matt Scoles said the situation was unpredictable and posed serious risks to the unrestrained occupants and public but thankfully caused no injuries.
- The man has been formally charged with multiple offenses, including kidnapping on two occasions, operating a vehicle while his license was suspended, taking a motor vehicle without permission, failing to stop when required, and resisting arrest twice.
- Police continue their investigation and have limited comments, while the case involving the man is currently before the court in Invercargill.
