Lebanese singer-turned-militant released on bail as a probe into 2013 clashes continues
Judicial officials said he paid $5,500 after being questioned on allegations of armed-group ties, money laundering and role in the 2013 Sidon clashes.
- On Wednesday, Lebanese authorities released pop star-turned-militant Fadel Shaker on bail after he spent months in custody awaiting retrial on armed group and money laundering charges. Judicial officials confirmed Shaker paid $5,500 to secure his release.
- Shaker surrendered to Lebanese military intelligence last October after 12 years in hiding within the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh near Sidon. He had been tried in absentia in 2020 and sentenced to 22 years for supporting a "terrorist" group.
- The judiciary approved release across four security cases, most notably the Abra case related to 2013 clashes. Shaker paid $1,117 in bail for each of three cases and 200 million Lebanese Liras for the Abra incident.
- During January testimony, Shaker denied taking part in the 2013 Sidon clashes that left more than a dozen soldiers dead. He testified he had grown distant from Salafist Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir before the violence erupted.
- Legal proceedings remain active as the probe into the allegations continues, according to judicial officials. Shaker is now staying in a rented apartment in a Beirut suburb following his release from the military facility.
