People's mines are cruel weapons and internationally outlawed. The Ottawa agreement, which also signed in Kiev, prohibits their use. However, as Russia uses them massively in the war, Ukraine is now getting out of it. "We cannot remain bound if the enemy has no borders," it says.
With the agreement the 164 contracting states renounce the use of landmines. Ukrainian President Selenskyi wants to use them because of the war against Russia. Ukraine is therefore not the first state.
Moscow continues its large-scale attacks on Ukraine and continues to put pressure on the neighbouring country. Kiev wants to use landmines to defend itself and leaves the Ottawa agreement.
