Italy court reorders extradition of Ukrainian to Germany in Nord Stream case

  • On Monday, the court of appeals in Bologna ruled that Serhii Kuznietsov, Ukrainian suspect held in Italy since August, could be extradited to Germany.
  • The Nord Stream pipelines that shipped Russian gas to Europe for years were damaged by huge blasts, and German investigators identified a Ukrainian cell of five men and one woman as the perpetrators.
  • German prosecutors allege Serhii Kuznietsov used forged identity documents to charter a yacht from Rostock, Germany, and he faces up to 15 years in prison while his defence claims functional immunity as a Ukrainian armed forces member.
  • The Court of Cassation sent the case back to Bologna court earlier this month over an issue with the European arrest warrant issued by Germany, Nicola Canestrini said.
  • Lawyer Nicola Canestrini said Serhii Kuznietsov will appeal the Bologna court of appeals decision, arguing the proceedings were tainted by serious procedural violations and denies involvement in the alleged cell.
