Bridge over the Strait, New Stop by the Court of Auditors. Salvini: "Confident"
The Audit Court found all three clauses legally flawed, delaying the €13.5 billion project amid concerns about cost, environment, and mafia influence, officials said.
- In a Monday decision, Italy's Audit Court struck down a third clause regulating the Messina Strait bridge, after earlier rejecting two clauses and pausing the €13.5bn scheme approved by CIPESS.
- The struck clauses governed the convention between the transport ministry and contractor Stretto di Messina SpA and were tied to the CIPESS resolution, while longstanding cost and risk concerns delayed the plan.
- Plans call for a 3.3-kilometre suspension bridge plus 40 kilometres of road and rail links, three new train stations and a business centre in Calabria, with 450 properties and hundreds of local occupants facing expropriation.
- The government said it will wait for the Audit Court to publish its reasons and respond point by point, Salvini said, `No surprises: this is the inevitable consequence of the Court of Auditors' initial stop`.
- Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said the start of work will be put off until next year, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicating sites would start in February; Green leader Angelo Bonelli, Green-Left Alliance, said they would appeal to EU courts if the government presses ahead.
