Home Office Says Epping Sex Offender Deported to Ethiopia

On Friday, Hadush Kebatu, Ethiopian national and convicted sex offender, was wrongly freed from HMP Chelmsford instead of being sent to an immigration detention centre.
Following the error, David Lammy, Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, said it appeared to be human error and ordered an independent investigation chaired by Dame Lynne Owens with stronger prison release checks.
The Metropolitan Police found Kebatu in Finsbury Park on Sunday morning after a manhunt, during which he spent just under 48 hours at large; Sky News reported he received 500 during his removal efforts.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said `I have pulled every lever to deport Mr Kebatu and remove him off British soil` and confirmed a suspended prison officer and another fired as the probe continues.
Previously, government figures show 262 prisoners were accidentally released year to March 2025, a 128% rise, while HMP Chelmsford was duped last year by a fake Royal Courts of Justice email.
