Body of missing priest found in central Mexico
Two suspects arrested in connection with the killing of Reverend Ernesto Baltazar Hern�ndez Vilchis, amid a rise in violence against clergy in Mexico with 10 priests killed since 2019.
- On Wednesday, Reverend Ernesto Baltazar Hernández Vilchis, missing since October 27, was found wrapped in plastic and tied to a chair in a drainage canal near Felipe Ángeles International Airport, with forensic authorities confirming his identity.
- The parish of Santa Cruz Cantera said Hernández Vilchis had taken up duties in early October and days later reported intruders cut security-camera cables and stole one bell.
- Authorities allege the victim spent hours with the man arrested and his partner, who allegedly attacked him; a separate woman is under investigation.
- The Catholic Multimedia Centre noted 10 priests were killed in Mexico between 2019 and 2024, while authorities reported 900 cases of extortion, death threats and aggression against Church members.
- The Mexico state prosecutor's office said authorities are investigating the death as a homicide and that the body was found about 9 miles away, but prosecutors have not disclosed a motive.
