Saudi Arabia plans for safer Hajj as more than 1mn pilgrims arrive
- More than 1.3 million Muslim pilgrims arrived in Saudi Arabia by early June 2025 to prepare for the multi-day hajj pilgrimage in Mecca amid extreme heat.
- This event follows last year's deadly heatwave that caused 1,301 deaths during the pilgrimage and temperatures up to 51.8 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to enhance safety measures.
- Saudi officials mobilized over 250,000 personnel, expanded shaded areas by 50,000 square meters, deployed more than 400 cooling units, and increased medical staff to mitigate heat-related risks.
- Hajj minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah stated last week that these measures aim to ensure a safer pilgrimage amid forecasted temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and growing pilgrim numbers.
- Authorities also intensified crackdowns on unregistered worshippers using raids, drone surveillance, and text alerts to prevent unauthorized attendance and reduce health and security hazards.
